James Oswald Reed

James Oswald Reed was born on 15th September 1885 in Grantham and was the son of Cornelius McNeal Reed a shop keeper and the late Ruth Reed née Neale of 13 Alfreton Road, Nottingham. His father born Cornelius McNeale Reed later known as Neal was born in 1854 in Leicester, his mother Ruth Neale was born in 1855 in Leicester, they were married in 1879 in Leicester and went on to have the following children, Cornelius b1880 Nottingham, Gertrude Elizabeth b1881 Nottingham, Charles William b1882 Nottingham, Betsy Jane b1884 Grantham, James Oswald b1885 Grantham, Ruth Beatrice b1887 Grantham, Edith Annie b1889 Grantham, Hilda Mary b1893 Grantham and Henry Sandford b1896 Grantham. His mother Ruth died in 1909 in Nottingham she was 54 years of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Alfreton Road, Nottingham and are shown as Neal 57 yrs a widow and shop keeper, he is living with his children, Edith Ann 22 yrs a cigar maker Hilda Mary 18 yrs at home and Henry Sandson 15 yrs a barber. James Oswald was living in London at the time of his marriage, he married Marion Glass (born 4th September 1884) on 25th March 1913 at St Pauls, Kensington, London, he gave his address as 76 Masbio Road, Hammersmith and his occupation as a postman, he was 27 yrs of age. They had a daughter Jean Ruth Beatrice born 29th July 1914. His probate proven on 4th March 1915 in London shows him as James Oswald Reed of 225 Queen's Road, Battersea, Surrey, died 16th January 1915 at the Military Annex, Milton, Portsmouth Hampshire, on active service, his effects of £81 were left to his widow Marion. His father re married Rebecca H Braybrook in 1926 at Nottingham. CWGC gives his wife details as Marion Reed of 16 Stansfield Street Radford Nottingham. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week which commenced on 2nd August 1915.
