Family History

George Lee was born in 1886 at Hyson Green and was the son of Arthur Lee a frame worker knitter and Ann Lee of Hyson Green, Nottingham. In the 1911 census he is living with his widowed mother Ann at 7 Alfred Street, Nottingham, they are shown as Ann Lee 58 yrs a widow and lace worker, she is living with her married son Arthur 37 yrs a lace warper, her single son George 25 yrs a bobbin maker and also her married daughter Betsy Duckitt 23 yrs and her husband Leonard Duckitt 25 yrs a bobbin threader and their children May Duckitt 2 yrs and Elizabeth Duckitt 5 months old. George married Mary Elizabeth Yates (born 1st February 1887 ) on the 23rd October 1911 at the Nottingham Register office. she brought a child to the marriage Winifred Lee Yates born 29th December 1909 They went on to have the following children, , Doris born 23rd August 1913, George born 14th February 1912 and Hilda born 30th August 1915 (she died on 23rd March 1916) they lived at 22 Hornbuckle Street, Radford, Nottingham. Following his death his widow Mary Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and three pence a week which commenced on 9th July 1917.

Military History

Private George Lee enlisted on 20th May 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 29 yrs and 4 months, his address was 22 Hornbuckle Street, Radford, Nottingham, he was a lace factory hand, his next of kin was his wife Mary of the same address, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 6th March 1916 and was killed in action on 10th October 1916, during the attack on the Schwaben Redoubt, near Thiepval, France during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval, France. Plot 10. Row H. Grave 6.
