Family History

William Charles Knight was born in 1888 at Astley, Worcestershire and was the son of William a market gardener and Clara Eudor Knight née Hodges of Astley, Worcestershire. His father William was born in 1860 at Claines, Worcestershire his mother Clara Eudor Hodges was born in 1868 at Adderley Worcestershire, they were married in 1886 in Worcestershire and had the following children, William Charles b1888, Gladys Blanche b1895, Wallace Donald b1905 and Stanley Russell b1907 all were born in Astley. William Charles married Lily Price (born 3rd August 1888) in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the West Bromwich registration district, they lived at 56 Montpelier Road, Dunkirk, Nottingham, they went on to have a son Sidney born 21st July 1911. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 11th November 1918.

Military History

Private William Charles Knight enlisted on 7th October 1914 at Birmingham whilst residing at Radford, he gave his age as 25 yrs and 188 days, he was a baker. He joined the Army Service Corps at Aldershot where he was posted to the 49th field bakery. He was promoted Corporal on 14th December 1914. He landed in France on 28th July 1915 and on 15th October 1917 he was compulsorily transferred to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He joined the battalion on 12th December 1917. He was killed in action on 25th April 1918 and is buried at Adelaide Cemetery, Villers Bretonneux, France.
