Edward Fines (junior) was born in 1891 at Beeston and was the son of the late Edward Fines (senior) a coal miner and Catherine Fines née Strutt of 20 Butler Street, Sailsbury Street, Radford Nottingham. His father Edward was born in 1858 at Dudley and his mother Catherine Strutt was born in 1862 at Nottingham, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children, Rose b1885, Anna b1889, Edward b1891, Alice b1893, Harry b1895, Sarah b1897, and Fred b1902 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 68 Sailsbury Street, Radford, Nottingham and were shown as Kate 49 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Rose 26 yrs a tester, Anna 22 yrs a driller, Edward 20 yrs a packer, Alice 18 yrs a presser, Harry 16 yrs a driller, Sarah 14 yrs an errand girl and Fred 9 yrs of age, Edward Fines (junior) married Lily Coker (born 6th July 1890 ) on 3rd January 1914 at Nottingham, they lived with his widowed mother at 20 Butler Street, Salisbury Street, Radford, they had a son Edward born 19th January 1914, however he died on 18th January 1915. Following Edward (junior) death his widow Lilly was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 9th April 1917.
Private Edward Fines enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 28th August 1915 and was killed on the Somme. With heavy rain adding to the battalion's discomfort, the enemy put down a heavy barrage of whizz-bangs (small calibre German shell, also called pipsqueaks) and high explosive shells on Constance trench. Two other ranks were killed and four wounded in this barrage. Edward was one of the two killed. He is buried at Ovillers Military Cemetery Grave Reference: I C 17 John Morse
