Percy Dominic

Percy was the eldest son of Arthur Dominic and his wife Eliza Jane nee Taylor. His father was born in Sneinton in about 1874 and his mother also in Sneinton in 1876 (J/A/S Radford). They were married at Radford parish church on 23 May 1893 (A/M/J Nottingham) and had eight children all of whom were born in Sneinton: Percy b. 1893 (J/A/S Nottingham), Arthur b. 1895 (O/N/D Nottingham, Cecil William b. 3 November 1897 (O/N/D Nottingham), Gladys b. 1900 (A/M/J Nottingham), Doris b. 1 June 1902 (J/A/S Nottingham), Edna b. 3 March 1907 (A/M/J Nottingham), Walter b. 1 September 1909 and Frank b. 22 April 1914 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1901 Arthur (27) a lace threader, and Eliza (24) were living at 8 Cropwell Terrace, Hawksley Road, Nottingham, with their four children, Percy (7), Arthur (5), Cecil (3) and Gladys (11 months). The family had moved to 10 Cardwell Terrace. Cardwell Street, Nottingham, by 1911. Arthur was now working as a lace maker. Their seven children were all at home on the night of the census: Percy (17) a lace maker/Leivers threader, Arthur (15) a core maker at a brass foundrym Cecil (13), Gladys (10), Doris (8), Edna (4) and Walter (1). Their youngest child, Frank, was born six years later in 1914. The family home was later at 96 Birkin Avenue, Hyson Green. Percy married May Florence Bleazard) in 1914 (J/A/S Nottingham) and they had one child, Percy Arthur b. 18 January 1915. The CWGC record gives his widow's address as 35 Hague Street, Old Radford. His son married Gladys M Flint in 1939 (O/N/D Nottingham) and died in 1987 (O/N/D Nottingham). His father, Arthur, attested on 10 April 1918 at the age of 44 years 202 days and served in the Army Service Corps (397247). He died aged 50 in 1924 (A/M/J Nottingham, and was buried on 31 May 1924. His widowed mother Eliza was living on St Albans Road, Arnold, Nottingham, in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled. Her occupation was given as 'house duties (paid)' Eliza married William Hearson in 1941 (J/A/S Basford) and died in 1955 (A/M/J Basford). Of Percy's siblings: Arthur attested in the Territorial Force in May 1912 (1585 Private, 7th Bn (Robin Hoods) Sherwood Foresters) and later transferred to embodied service in the Regiment. He served in France from 28 February 1915 and was killed in action on 1 July 1916 aged 21, buried Foncquevillers Military Cemetery. (See record on this ROH) Cecil Wiliam attested on 23 April 1915 (24770 Private 15th Bn Sherwood Foresters) but was discharged on medical grounds on 8 December 1917 (Silver Badge no. 290303). However, he enlisted in the RAF on 10 August 1918 (283579) at the age of 22 but was subsequently discharged to the RAF Reserve, 'surplus to RAF requirements', on 18 March 1919. He was discharged from the RAF Reserve when he enlisted in the Lincoln Regiment on 20 September 1919 (64852 Private), serving to 17 January 1920. There is a record that he enlisted in the Class 'E' Reserve RAF on 12 May 1939. Cecil married Nellie Stimpson on 20 May 1918 (A/M/J Nottingham) and they had at least one child, Stanley Allen Ralph b. 17 January 1920. They initially lived at 96 Birkin Avenue but it is likely they later lived in Berkshire. Cecil probably died in 1955 (J/F/M Abingdon Berkshire). Gladys probably married Ernest A Bugg (b. 4 July 1897) in 1919 (J/A/S Nottingham) and in 1939 was living at 21 Catherine Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse, with her husband Ernest, a collier hewer, and their daughter Alice May (later Harris) b. 12 February 1920, a wages clerk. Gladys died on 21 April 1992; the probate record gave her address as The Beeches, 59 High Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Doris died unmarried at the age of 19 in 1921 (J/A/S Nottingham); buried 8 August. Edna died unmarried in February 1930 (J/F/M Nottingham); buried 11 February. Walter probably married Alice L Issom in 1934 (J/F/M Nottingham) and died in Canada in 1991l (Pineforest Cemetery, Ottowa, Ontario); the burial record names his spouse as Alice L Dominic. Frank married Winifred Slater in 1935 (J/F/M Nottingham) and they had at least one child, Percy Arthur b. 19 May 1935 (1935 A/M/J Nottingham-Slater, d. 1 December 2007). Frank probably died in 1985 (March Boston Lincs) aged 70.
