John Waterhouse and Elizabeth Morley were both born and bred in Tuxford. John was a farm worker when they married in 1878. The couple made their home in Manvers Street, Tuxford, an address which they resided in, in all the future census. They had four children, all born in Tuxford, Samuel born 1880, William born 1883, Mary in 1885 and Tom born 1888. When Tom was 10 years old in 1898, his father died at the age of 43. In 1901 his mother was making ends meet by taking in washing. Samuel was employed as a railway engine cleaner, William as a general labourer, Mary as a domestic servant and Ton, the youngest was still at school. When 1911 came round the family home at Manvers Street consisted only with the widowed Elizabeth and her youngest, Tom who was working as a woggoner on a farm.
Pte Tom Waterhouse Retford Times 7th June 1918Pte Tom Waterhouse, Sherwood Foresters. This brave soldier was killed in action in France on March 21st 1918. He had served nearly three years in the Army, prior to which, the gallant soldier was four years in the Yeomanry. He was seriously wounded in the arm and head in June 1917, In pre-war days the deceased was a drayman at Langwith Junction Station.Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France
