Family History

Wilfred Walker was born in 1899 at Hucknall and was the son of James a coal miner hewer and Emily Walker née Freeman of 6 Lime Street, Sutton in Ashfield. His father James was born in 1867 at Keyworth , his mother Emily Freeman was born in 1869 at Eastwood, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , John Frederick b1890, Charlotte b1892, Alfred Radford b1894 all were born in Hucknall they went on to have the following children Sarah Ann b1896, Lille b1898, Wilfred b1899, Mabel b1902, Leonard b1904 and William Henry b1909 all were born in Stanton Hill, their last child Ethel Fanny was born in 1910 at Sutton in Ashfield. In the 1911 census the family were living at 6 Lime Street Sutton in Ashfield and were shown as James 44 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Emily 42 yrs and their children, John Frederick 21 yrs a coal miner hewer, Charlotte 19 yrs a tin factory worker, Albert Radford 17 yrs a colliery horse man, Sarah Ann 15 yrs working at home, Lillie 13 yrs working at home, Wilfred 12 yrs a scholar, Mabel 9 yrs a scholar, Leonard 7 yrs a scholar, William Henry 2 yrs and Ethel Fanny 7 months old.

Military History

Gunner Wilfred Walker enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 76th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, he died of wounds on 22nd May 1918 aged 19 yrs, he is buried at Mailly Wood Cemetery, Mailly-Maillet, Somme.

Extra Information

his brother Private Albert Radford Walker enlisted at Sutton-in-Ashfield, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action 30th July 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Ypres Belgium.
