Father: Albert C. Toplis, born in 1849 at Bulwell, Nottingham and working as an iron turner. Mother: Mary Ann Toplis, born in 1852 at Nottingham. Brothers:Tom, born 1876 and working as a labourer, Harry, born in 1879, Ireand(?), born in 1883, Charley, born in 1886, Leonard, born in 1887 and Herbert, born in 1890. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 30 Marple Street, Nottingham before moving to 35 Conway Street, St. Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. Ernest Toplis married Ellen Spurr in 1904 at Nottingham, they lived at 35 Conway Street, Bangor Street, Nottingham, they had two sons, Albert Ernest born 15th November 1907 and Frederick Arthur born 12th September 1911.

Military History

Spr. Toplis was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. He was killed in action in the Ypres Salient on 26/06/1917, and was buried at Bedford House Cemetery.

Extra Information

His brother Rifleman Herbert Toplis enlisted on 11th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 24 yrs and 304 days, his occupation was that of a polisher. He was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and landed in France on 30th July 1915. He was killed in action on 14th November 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
