Family History

William Edward Todd was born in 1895 at Tickhill and was the son of Edward Holtby a labourer and Sarah Maria Todd née Edgley of 20 Albert Street, Warsop. His father Edward Holtby was born in 1865 at Greetham, Lincolnshire, his mother Sarah Maria Edgley was born in 1869 at Ramsay, Essex, they were married on 29th December 1893 at Tickhill, Doncaster, they went on to have the following children, Esther b1893 Tickhill, William b1895 Tickhill, Ernest Henry b1897 Cuckney, Charles Herbert b1899 Cuckney, Walter Percy b1901 Cuckney, Winifred May b1903 Cuckney, Florence Lilley b1904 Warsop, Doris Rose b1907 Warsop, Frederick Arthur b1909 Warsop and George Stanley b1912 Warsop. In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Albert Street, Warsop and are shown as Edward Holtby Todd 46 yrs a labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 42 yrs and their children, Esther 18 yrs a domestic servant, William Edward a labourer, Ernest Henry 14 yrs a farm labourer, Charles Herbert 12 yrs a scholar, Walter Percy 10 yrs, Winifred May 9 yrs, Florence Lilly 7 yrs, Doris Rose 4 yrs and Frederick Arthur 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private William Edward Todd enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Warsop, he initially served with the service number 13956 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he died on 4th July 1916 whilst serving with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he is buried at Mericourt L'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension France.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser; 27/07/1916: Warsop Lad Dies of Wounds. The son of Mr and Mrs Todd of Albert Street, Warsop had been wounded on 04/07/1916 and has died of these wounds. His brother Private Charles Herbert Todd enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Warsop, he served with the 7th battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He was killed in action on 22nd August 1918 and he is buried at Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel- Bercourt, France.
