Family History

Samuel Thorpe was born in 1886 he was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Mary Jane Thorpe née Slack of Pleasley Hill. Thomas was born in 1866 at Wolverhampton, Mary Jane Slack was born in 1867 at Wolverhampton, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood. in 1911 the family were living at 34 Bagshaw Street, Pleasley Hill, Thomas 45 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 44 yrs and their children, Samuel 24 yrs a coal miner loader, George Herbert 21 yrs a coal miner loader and Frank 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver. Samuel married Florence Reason,( born 1889 at Pleasley) on 9th December 1911 at Pleasley Hill, Florence died on 3rd April 1918 1911 she was 29 years old they had daughters Florence Jessie born 3rd July 1912 and Alice born 28th September 1914. His pension record card shows the guardian of his children was George Herbert (his brother) of 59 Bagshaw Street, Pleasley Hill

Military History

Gunner Samuel Thorpe enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Mansfield, he served with the 94th brigade Royal Field Artillery, He died of wounds on 3rd October 1918 and is buried at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport France.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser, 17/10/1918: Samuel Thorpe RFA, the eldest son of Mr & Mrs Thomas Thorpe of Pleasley Hill died 03/10/1918. Captured by Germans, but escaped and arrived home just before his wife died. He was admitted to hospital with shell shock and died 03/10/1918 leaving 2 orphan children.
