Family History

George Johnson Taylor of Tuxford, married in 1871 to Harriet Clark. After having three daughters, Annie Lizzie, Clara and Bertha, Harriet died in 1881 age 30. George remarried a year later to local girl, Mary Annie Smith at Retford. George was a tailor by trade, which he practised whilst living at Newcastle Street, Tuxford for many years. The couple had seven children, Agnes born 1884, George 1886, Fannie (Francis) 1887, Joseph 1889, Albert 1890, Ralph 1894, Donald 1895. They were all born in Tuxford except George who in 1891 is recorded as born in Sheffield. By 1911, Joseph had joined the Army.

Military History

Joseph Taylor joined the Sherwood Foresters, being attested for short service on the 17th January 1911 age 22. In April 1911 he was in barracks at Normanton, Derby as an infantry Line Recruit. He was posted to India on the 18th October 1912 and returned home with his regiment on 3 Sept 1914. He spent very little time in the UK as on the 4th November he went with the British Expeditionary Force to France and was killed in action just 17 days later. His Ar-my career had lasted 3 years 314 days. His name is recorded on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
