John Thompson, who was a widower with children, married Ellen Gabbitass in 1886 at Worksop. In 1891 they were living at 12 Crown Terrace, Worksop with a mixture of children from both previous marriages. By 1901 they had moved to Marecroft and had had 5 children of their own, Sarah Ann born 1887, Frederick born 1888, Char-lotte born 1890, Rose born 1892 and Thomas Edward born 1896. In 1904 Ellen died aged 40 leaving John Thompson a widower for the second time. In 1911, the youngest of the family, Thomas Edward, was still living with his father and working as wood yard worker and in 1916, he enlisted in the army.
Worksop Guardian 3 January 1919 Sapper Thomas E Thompson We have this week to record the death, from pneumonia in hospital in France of Sapper Thomas Edward Thompson, R.E., son of Mr John Thompson, Marecroft, Worksop, who died on December 4th. The deceased was 23 years of age, and enlisted on July 7th 1916. A fortnight afterwards he was drafted to France, where he saw much service. He was home on leave in March last, and was back again in France in time to take part in the last stages of war. Before enlisting, he was employed on Steetley pit top. The deceased lad was much liked by those who knew him, and his friends will hear of his death with much regret.
