Family History

Harold Stratton was born in 1894 at Islington and was the son of David a railway guard and Fanny Stratton, née Darwood of 59, Ashwell St., Netherfield, Nottingham. His father was born in 1869 in March, Cambridgeshire and his mother Fanny Darwood was born in 1869 in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, they were married in 1890 at Huntingdon and went on to have 4 children, Alice b1893 Islington, Harold b1894 Islington, Winifred b1896 Islington and Percy b1897 at Netherfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 59 Ashwell Street, Netherfield, Nottingham and are shown as David 42 yrs a railway guard, he is living with his wife Fanny 42 yrs and their children Alice 18 yrs a lace finisher, Harold 17 yrs a gold blocker, Winifred 15 yrs a typist and Percy 14 yrs a junior clerk on the railway.

Military History

Corporal Harold Ernest Stratton, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 29th September 1917 and is buried in White House Cemetery, St. Jean-les-Ypres.

In memoriam published 28th September 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STRATTON. – In loving memory of Cpl. H. E. Stratton, of Netherfield, Sherwood Foresters, att. T.M.B., killed in action September 29th, 1917. They never quite leave us, our friends who have passed through the shadows of death to the sunlight above, a thousand sweet memories are holding them fast, to the places they blessed with their presence and love. – Father, mother, Winnie, Percy, Alice, and Ernest. “STRATTON. – In loving memory of Cpl. H. E. Stratton, of Netherfield, Sherwood Foresters, att. T.M.B., killed in action September 29th, 1917.
