Henry Caloe Stapleton was born in 1899 at Nottingham and was the son of Harry a coal miner hewer and Martha Stapleton née Caloe of 16 Stanley Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham. His father Harry was born in 1869 at Cinderhill, his mother Martha Caloe was born in 1871 at Sheffield, they were married in 1892 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, May b1893, Florence b1894, Henry Caloe b1899, Thomas Edward b1902, Winifred b1906 and Ernest b1909 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Malt Cottages, Eland Street, New Basford and were shown as Harry 42 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Martha 40 yrs and their children May 18 yrs a tobacco leaf stripper, Florence 17 yrs a lace curtain folder, Harry Caloe 11 yrs a scholar, Winifred 5 yrs and Ernest 2 yrs of age.
Private Henry Caloe Stapleton attested on 22nd February 1917 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 224 days, his address as 329 Radford Road, Hyson Green, he was a carter and his next of kin was his father Harry of the same address. Posted to the reserves he was mobilised for war on 25th August 1917 at Nottingham, he was now 18 yrs and 48 days old. He was posted with service number 93003 into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. On 25th January 1918 he was transferred to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and on 12th April 1918 embarked from Folkstone and disembarked at Boulogne. He was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry on 14th April 1918 and was killed in action on 19th July 1918. He is buried at Outtersteene Communal Cemetery, Bailluel, France.
