Family History

Walter Staples was born in 1888 he was the son of the late Robert a farm labourer and Eliza Staples of Chapel Lane, Costock. Robert was born in 1851 at East Leake, he died in 1907 aged 56 yrs, Eliza was born in 1851 at Sutton Bonnington. they were married prior to 1873 and had 7 children, In 1911 his widowed mother Eliza is 59 yrs of age she is a charwoman living on her own at Costock. In 1911 Walter is 24 yrs and is a serving soldier in the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he is in barracks in India.

Military History

Private Walter Staples enlisted on 10th February 1906 at Loughborough, giving his age as 19 years and 2 months he served with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was in India on the outbreak of the 'Great War' He moved with his regiment from India to Marseilles in September/October 1914 and then to Alexandria and arrived at Basra on 8th December 1914. He died of disease on 11th June 1916, he is buried at Amara War Cemetery 22.G.9
