Family History

Arthur Smith was born in 1893 he was the son of George a cotton mill overlooker and the late Harriett Smith of Wood Street, Mansfield. George was born in 1851 Radford , Harriett was born in 1852 she died in 1903 aged 52 yrs they had further children, Samuel, George, Edward and Clara. Arthur married Lily Smith. married 08th April 1912 St John's Church, Mansfield they had children, Ivy born 21st September 1912 and Jessie born 18th March 1916 . They lived at 52 Haywood Street, Mansfield, next door to Lily's parents who lived at number 54. Lily's brother, Herbert Henry Smith was killed 20/11/1917 whilst serving with the Sherwood Foresters. Commencing 8th October 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week, at this date she was living at 11 Belper Street, Mansfield.

Military History

Private Arthur Smith enlisted on 24th May 1916 at Mansfield, giving his age as 23 yrs and 10 months, he was a brewers labourer he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 7th August 1916 at Derby he was posted to the 1/5th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 30th December 1916 landing the following day at Le Harve.. He was killed in action on 14th March 1917 and is buried at Shrine Cemetery, Bucquoy, France.
