Ernest Simpkin was born in 1895 the son of John Thomas and Louisa Simpkins and the brother of William, Lizzie, George, Thomas, Walter and Connie Simpkins. In 1901 they lived on Church Land Stapleford Nottinghamshire. He married Fanny Wallace (born 7th September 1889) on 15th November 1913 at the United Methodist Church at Stapleford, they lived at 10 Cyril Avenue Stapleford Nottinghamshire. Commencing 6th January 1919 Fanny Wallace was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private Ernest Simpkin he enlisted 8th December 1915 at Long Eaton under Lord Derby's Scheme giving his age as 23 yrs and 10 months he was a lace worker. He was mobilised 27th April 1916 and he embarked through Folkestone on 18th December 1916. He was wounded in action on 21st March 1918 and died the same day. His name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial
