Frederick was born in 1884 in Lenton, the son of William Shrewsbury, a lace maker and professional cricketer, and Emma Shrewsbury née Walker. His father William was born in Lenton in 1855 and his mother was born in 1855 in Nottingham. They were married in Nottingham in 1873 and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Lenton: Arthur b1875, William b1880, Hebert b1882, Fred b1884, Flora b1886, George Edward b1887, Jos b1891, Mable b1893. His mother Emma died in Nottingham in 1905, age 50 yrs In the 1911 census, his father William 56 yrs was living in the village of Fiskerton, Nottinghamshire, occupation given as professional cricketer. Also in the home on the night of the census were his two unmarried daughters Flora 25 yrs and Mable 18 yrs Frederick was the husband of Eleanor Maud (née Bonnett) whom he married in 1905 in Nottingham. In 1911 census they were shown living at 21 Broadholme Street Lenton Boulevard Nottingham. They had a son William Edward Shrewsbury born 3rd April 1912 in Nottingham. At the time of his death his family was living at 19 Midland Avenue, New Lenton, Nottingham.
Driver Frederick Shrewsbury enlisted at Nottingham and served with “C” Battery, 86th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Frederick died from gas poisoning at 5 General Hospital at Rouen on 20th August 1918. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France (grave reference R.11.L.14).
CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'Fondly remembered' Inscription on additional stone at family grave, Holy Trinity churchyard, Lenton: (Florence and Edward Green) Frederick [Shrewsbury], the beloved husband of Maud Shrewsbury who died August 20th (sic) 1918 on active service, aged 35 years. ‘Until the shadows flee away.’ Notices published 26th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SHREWSBURY. – Died of shell gas poisoning in hospital August 20th, Fred Shrewsbury, the devoted husband of Maud Shrewsbury, and late of Messrs. Goddard and Sons. Deeply mourned. – Wife and child. “SHREWSBURY. – Died of shell gas poisoning in hospital, August 20th. Ever in our thoughts. – Sorrowing father and mother-in-law and family.” 'In memoriam' notice published 20th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SHREWSBURY. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Frederick, died in France, August 20th, 1918. A loss too great to be forgotten. – Sorrowing wife and child. “SHREWSBURY. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Dvr. F. Shrewsbury, R.F.A., who died in France from gas poisoning August 20th, 1918.
