Family History

Fred was born in 1889 at Hawksworth and was the son of William And Maria (Mary) Shepherd, Of Manor Farm, Flintham, Newark, Notts. William and Mary had nine children it total, however sadly two died in infancy, their children were :- Ethel, Charles William, Hilda May, Herbert, Fred, Alfred Leonard and Frank Harold all of whom were born in Hawksworth In the 1901 census the family are living at Flintham , William is a thrashing machine engine driver and he is living in the village with his wife Mary and their 7 children. By the 1911 census , the family are shown as living at Hill Farm, Flintham, William is a farm labourer and all his children are still living with him and his wife, Fred is now 22 years and is an agricultural labourer.

Military History

Fred enlisted into the Army in Newark and served as Private 48174 with the 11th battalion Northumbrian Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 27th October 1918 whilst in Italy. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Giavera Memorial in Italy.
