Family History

James was the son of James Scott and his first wife, Mary Ann (née Lees). His father was born in East Markham, Nottinghamshire, in 1857 and his mother in Elkelsey, Nottinghamshire, in about 1860. James and Mary Ann were married at East Markham St John the Baptist in July 1890 and had at least three children who were born in East Markham: May b. 1891, Samuel Lees b. 1893 and James b. 1896. In 1891 James, a farmer, and Mary were living at Cleveland House, East Markham, with their children May (9), Samuel (8) and James (5). Also in the household were three farm servants and one domestic servant. Mary Ann died in 1903 and James married secondly Elizabeth Fox (b. 1868), a widow of Bramall, Cheshire, at Stockport St Thomas in March 1904. His wife had a son, John Fox, by her first marriage. Elizabeth and James had a daughter, Edith, the following year. The family was still at Cleveland House in 1911: James and Elizabeth, May, who did dairy work, Samuel and John Fox (16) who both worked on the farm, James and Edith (6). Also in the household was one domestic servant. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, the farm was being managed by James' surviving son Samuel who lived at Cleveland House with his wife. However, James (retired) and Elizabeth with their divorced daughter, Edith, were still living at Markham at North Holme Farm, where James died in March 1943.
