Family History

He was born c1897 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, and was the son of Charles Sanderson, and his wife Hannah. There were at least four children in the family, Harold, Jonathan, George and Mabel. In the 1911 Census the family are living at Jessamine Cottages , Tudor St , Sutton in Ashfield, Johnathan is 13 years of age and an errand boy. At the time of Jonathan Sanderson's death, his parents were living at 21 Tudor Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.

Military History

Jonathan enlisted in Sutton in Ashfield and served with the 15th battalion , Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys ) Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd August 1916, aged 19 years, and was buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.

Extra Information

The Battalion diary for 23rd August 1916 records – ‘Disposition of Regiment -15th Sherwood Foresters was occupying the trenches East of ARROW HEAD COPSE. Two Companies in the Front Line, one in Support and one in Reserve. There was heavy machine rifle fire, and at the same time the enemy threw bombs into the trenches causing several casualties.’ Jonathan unfortunately was one of the casualties.
