Family History

John Rudkin was born in 1894 at Colston Bassett and was the son of George Edward a cow man on a farm and Elizabeth Ann Rudkin née Plowright of Newton Nottinghamshire.His father George Edward was born in 1867 at Castle Bytham, Lincolnshire, his mother Elizabeth Ann Plowright was born in 1869 at Ketton, Rutland, they were married on 22nd October 1889 at Little Bytham, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 8 children, sadly one died in early childhood, their children were Mary Ann b1893 Shelford, John b1894 Colston Bassett, Katherine b1896 Shelford, Robert b1899 Shelford, Frederick b1902 Shelford, Arthur b1905 Shelford, Gertruded b1907 Newton and Hilda b1910 Newton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Newton village and are shown as George Edward 44 yrs a cow man on a farm, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 42 yrs and their children, John 16 yrs a farm labourer, Robert 12 yrs a scholar, Arthur 6 yrs, Gertrude 4 yrs and Hilda 9 months old.

Military History

Private John Rudkin, enlisted on 14th April 1913 at Cartlon, he was 19 yrs of age and lived at Newton with his father George Edward, his next of kin, he was a farm labourer employed by Mr Baker. He served with the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment and landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He was killed in action on 30th July 1915 ,he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate), panel 39 and 41.
