Frank Marshall Rigley was born in 1896 in Basford and was the son of John Thomas a deputy coal miner and Sarah Rigley née Marshall of 255 Vernon Road Old Basford Nottingham. His father John Thomas was born in 1872 in Cinderhill, Nottingham , his mother Sarah Marshall was also born in 1872 in Basford, they were married in Nottingham in 1891 and went one to have 3 children by the 1911 census , 1 sadly died in infancy, the other was Connie born 1899 also in Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 15 Mandalay Street, Basford and were shown as John Thomas 39 yrs a coal miner deputy (underground) he is living with his wife Sarah 39 yrs and their 2 children Frank Marshall 14 yrs an errand boy and Connie 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Frank Marshall Rigley, enlisted on 6th April 1915 into the territorial army and served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He was 19 yrs and 6 months old and he resided at 255 Vernon Road, Old Basford. He embarked from Southampton on 18th March 1916 and was posted to the base depot the following day. On 14th May 1916 he joined his battalion in the field and within a few days was killed in action on 23rd May 1916. He is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery.
In memoriam published 23rd May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “RIGLEY. – In loving memory of our dear grandson and nephew, Private Marshall Rigley, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action May 23rd, 1916. Ever in our thoughts. – From grandma, granddad, aunt Jinnie, and uncle Fred. “RIGLEY. – In loving memory of Private F. M. Rigley, killed in action May 23rd, 1916. For ever in our thoughts. – His loving mother, father, and sister. “RIGLEY. – In loving memory of Private F. M. Rigley, killed in action May 23rd, 1916.
