Family History

George Richmond (a stockman) and Violetta Southern were married in 1899 registered at Bingham, Notts. They produced a child, Horace W, born Coddington 1890. The following year the family moved to Langford, Notts where they had three more children, Arthur Cecil 1892, Rachel L 1893 and George E 1896. By 1911 Arthur had left the family home and was working as a farm servant, wagoner on Charles Tyson’s farm, at Sutton, Beckingham, Newark. He later worked at Red Hill Farm, Bestwood Park.

Military History

Before enlisting at Nottingham, he worked at Red Hill Farm, Bestwood Park, Arnold. Joined the army in Oct. 1914 and went to France in Aug. 1915. He was slightly wounded and had septic poisoning in the knee and was in a base hospital in France, but was never sent home. In July 1916 his parents received a letter from one of his comrades, stating that he was wounded in the leg and seen to be picked up by the Germans. But it has been impossible to trace him as a prisoner of war and he was presumed dead in June 1917. (On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the 46th (North Midland) Division made a failed attack on the Gommecourt salient). His name appears on the Theipval Memorial, France.
