Family History

Charles Robert Penson was born in 1883 he was the son Of Edward and Clara Ada Penson née Hodgson. Edward was born in 1851 at Navenby, Lincolnshire, Clara Ada Hodgson was born in 1852 at Louth, they were married in 1874 at Louth, they had 5 children. Charles married Annie Elizabeth Trafford in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Horncastle registration district, they went on to have a daughter Gladys Mabel born 3rd March 1906 in Lincolnshire. Annie died in 1906 she was 21 yrs of age. Charles went on to re marry in 1909, he married Ethel Mastin (born 23rd November 1882) who was a widow, they were married on 20th October 1909 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel at Newark Road, Lincoln. Ethel brought a child to the marriage Hilda Ruby Mastin born 3rd March 1906. the family lived at Chapel Lane, Bingham, they had two further children Eric Charles born 12th August 1910 in Lincolnshire and Lewis George born 16th October 1914 at Bingham. Commencing 12th November 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week, on this date she was living at 145 Sneinton Boulevard, Nottingham

Military History

Sapper Charles Penson enlisted on 19th April 1915 at Nottingham, he was 31 yrs and 7 months old, he was a carpenter he stated he had previous service with the 4th battalion Lincoln Territorials with whom he had served from 1908 until 1912. He was posted as a sapper in the Royal Engineers and joined them at Chatham Depot on 29th April 1915. He served with the 7th Field Company and landed in France on 19th November 1915. He received a shrapnel injury on 15th February 1916 and was admitted to a casualty clearing station and then hospital, returning to his unit on 25th June 1916. He was killed in action on 22nd April and is buried at London Cemetery, Neuville-Vitasse
