He was the son of Samuel Peach and Mary Ann Prudence Peach (nee Matthews) who were married in 1880. They had two children, William Stanley and Ernest James. Samuel was a company secretary.In 1891 Samuel (40) and Mary Ann (41) were living at 4 Clyde Villas, Meadows, with their two sons, William (6) and Ernest (2). Ten years later in 1901 they were living at 2 Patrick Road, West Bridgford; William was training to be a board teacher while Ernest was still at school. Also in the household was Mary Ann's sister, Emma Amelia Matthews (47).By 1911 Samuel and Mary Ann were living at 24 Elm Avenue, Nottingham. Both sons were still at home and their aunt, Emma, was also still living with the family. Samuel now employed a domestic servant, Ethel Elizabeth Walker Grice (22).Ernest's father died on 15 January 1918.Samuel and Mary Ann's other son, William, also served in the Sherwood Foresters and reached the rank of Lieutenant; he was in France from 29 January 1918 and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
7th Bn. attd. 139th Coy Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). He was a cadet in the OTC and promoted second lieutenant on 17 September 1915. He served in France from 16 February 1916. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Panel Reference: Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
