John was born in 1877 at Lickey End, Worcestershire and was the son of Daniel a bricklayers labourer and Julia Britton néeHunt
His parents Daniel was born in 1840 in Staple Hill Worcestershire and his mother Julia Hunt was born at Dayhouse Bank, Worcestershire in 1843 she died in 1908 in Nottinghamshire she was aged 65 yrs They were married on 20th May 1866 at Bromsgrove and had four children all born in Lickey End, Fanny b1867, Mary b1876, John b1877 and Annie b1880.
By the 1901 census the family had moved to Nottingham and were living at 39 Hunt Street, St Anns.
He was the husband of Edith Britton née Bradshaw (born 25th April 1877 ) of 32 Thurman Street Hyson Green Nottingham, they were married in 1907 in Nottingham and went on to a son John born 22nd july 1907.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Independent Street, Nottingham, John shown as 33 yrs and a carter is living with his wife Edith 33 yrs and son John 3 yrs , they are living with his mother in law Eliza Bradshaw 72 yrs a widow and shop keeper.
Commencing 26th July 1915 his widow Edith was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Lance Corporal John Britton, who served as John Mellors enlisted at Nottingham , he stated he had been born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire and was residing in Radford, Nottingham. he served with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, died of wounds on 19th December 1914 at 13th General Hospital, Boulogne and was buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 2nd February 1915 :-
BRITTON. - Died of wounds, December 19th, Lce.-Corporal J. Britton, of the 1st Leicesters, the beloved husband of Edith Britton, aged 37 years. He died a noble death.”
