Family History

Walter Morris was born in 1882 at Pirton, Worcestershire and was the son of John a market gardener and the late Sophia Morris née Rea of Pirton, Worcestershire. His father John was born in 1849 at Dormston, Worcestershire and his mother Sophia Rae was born in 1852 at Kemsey, Worcestershire, she died in 1904 aged 52 yrs they were married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Pershore Registration district, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children, all born in Pirton were, John b1876, Catherine Sophia b1877, Charles Henry b1879, Selina b1880, Walter b1882, Florence Beatrice b1885 and Albert Edward b1889. In the 1911 census we find his widowed father John 62 yrs of age and a market gardener living at Pirton village, he is living with his daughter Selina 31 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census we find Walter is living at 16 Orchard Street, Woodhouse Road, Mansfield, with his older married brother John, they are shown as John 35 yrs an electric engine driver living with his wife Florence 33 yrs and Walter 29 yrs (his brother) a coal miner.

Military History

Private Walter Morris, 1/6th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, formerly 42578 of the South Notts. Hussars, enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield. He died of “disease” on 8th February 1917. He is buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery.
