Family History

Samuel was born in 1886 at Hucknall Torkard and was the son of Samuel a grocer and mary Mellows , they lived at 12 Whyburn Street,Hucknall. Samuel and Mary had a very large family of 13 children , sadly two children died in infancy, some of their children were:- Mary, Florence, Ernest, Samuel, Henry, Ivy, Isabella and Henry Irving. In the 1901 census the family are living at 51 Bestwood Road, Hucknall Torkard and by the 1911 census are living at 12 Whyburn Street,Hucknall, However Samuel in the 1911 census has left home and is a boarder , aged 24 years , a shop assistant grocer, and is living at 44 Carter Street, Mansfield with Charles White and his family.

Military History

Samuel enlisted in Mansfield where he was working and joined the South Nottinghamshire Hussars serving with service number 1957. he later transferred to the 20th Squadron Machine Gun Corps. He saw service in Mesopotamia where he died on 8/9th November 1918 and is buried in Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria. Grave reference A 111.
