John Meakin was born in 1899 the son of George Samuel a hosiery trimmer and Sarah Lizzie Meakin. George Samuel was born in 1876 in Basford and his mother Sarah Lizzie was born in 1878 T Kirkby. Married in 1899, they had four children three surviving infancy - John b.1899, George b.1904 and Francis Roy b.1909. In 1911 the family was living at 53, Bailey Street, Old Basford. Also living with them at the address was John Meakin (60).

Nottingham Evening Post, ‘Roll of Honour’, 19 April 1918: ‘Meakin. Died of wounds, April 7th, 1918, Sergt; John Meakin, Royal Flying Corps, aged 18 years, late of 53, Bailey-street, Old Basford, after two years’ service in France. He died that we might live.
