Family History

Frank Herbert Mayo was born in 1895 in Nottingham and was the son of Thomas a hairdresser and Alice Margaret Mayo née Cartlidge of 50, Castle Gate, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1857 in Nottingham and his mother Alice Margaret Cartlidge was born in 1850 at Ompton Nottinghamshire, they were married on 9th February 1879 at St John the Baptist church, Nottingham, they went on to have 12 children sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were , Adelaide Elizabeth b1879, Thomas Henry b1882, Alfred b1884 Coletta Wilhelmina b1891, Alice b1893, John b1893, Frank Herbert b1895, Bernard b1897 and Norman b1898 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 50 Castle Gate, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas 54 yrs a hairdresser, he is living with his wife Alice Margaret 53 yrs and their children, Coletta Wilhelmina 20 yrs a hosiery mender, Alice 18 yrs a machinist, Frank Herbert 16 yrs a hairdressers assistant and Norman 13 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Frank Herbert Mayo enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 34620 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was serving with the 10th battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 18th November 1916. He is buried at Grandcourt Road Cemetery, Grandcourt

Extra Information

His brother Private Thomas Henry Mayo enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Lowdham, he served with 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 15th April 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium.
