Robert Marshall was born in 1877 in Nottingham and worked as a bricklayer's labourer. His wife, Eliza Marshall, was born in 1878 also in Nottingham and was working as a home lace worker. They had one further son, Tom, born in 1898 and four sisters; Emma, born in 1900, Nelly, born in 1902, Lizzie, born in 1904 and Mabel, born in 1906. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 21 Rippon Street, Nottingham before moving to 22 Camden Street, Sneinton Road, Nottingham.
Marshall volunteered for service, attesting in Nottingham on 09/09/1914. Following training he was drafted to France, arriving on 25/08/1915. He was discharged from the army as a result of sickness on 16/05/1916, but awarded the Silver War Badge No. 62525. He died soon afterwards and was buried at the General Cemetery, Nottingham.
