David Pirie was born in 1899 the only son of David a furniture dealer and Eliza Murray. His father was born in 1850 at Aberdeen, his mother in 1861 at Alfreton. They were married in 1882 in Nottingham. In 1901, David, a civil servant, Eliza and their two year old son, David, were living at 50 Marwell Road, Wolverhampton. By 1911 the family was living at 338 Radford Road, Hyson Green. His parents later lived at 33 Randal Street, Hyson Green.
David Pirie Murray enlisted at Nottingham was attached to 76th Infantry Bde. He formerly served (79478) with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment).He died on 17th July 1918 in the War Hospital, Croydon and is buried in Hucknall Cemetery Grave Reference: C. South 2331
A tablet at the foot of the CWGC headstone reads, 'In loving memory of David Pirie Murray born 31st March 1899 died 17th July 1918 [and] Joe Bramley, born (-) June 1876 died 23rd July 1898. Both late of the Ordnance Survey.' Soldiers' Effects: his father was his sole legatee.
