Family History

He was born about 1890, the eldest son and second child of John and Mary Annie Nicholson. John was a railway worker with the Midland Railway Company and in 1891 the family lived in the Meadows in the parish of St Saviour. John and Mary had two children at this time; Annie Elizabeth (5, b. Brigg) and Arthur (1). By 1901 they had moved to 16 Launder Street, Meadows, and now had a second son, John Thomas (9). Arthur was also living at home, but Annie Elizabeth was not in the house on the night of the census. However, ten years later in 1911 she, like John, was living in the family home, now 46 Mayfield Grove, Meadows. Arthur, though,was had married Edith (nee Lea) in 1909, and was living at 62 Lamcote Street, Meadows. They had one daughter, Edith Annie, born in the autumn of 1909. At the time of Arthur's death his wife and daughter were living at 61 Colleygate Road, Meadows, and his parents were living at 31 Kinglake Street, Meadows. His parents later moved to 75 Broomhill Road, Bulwell. Arthur's younger brother, Private John Thomas, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) 4th Bn, died of wounds in France on 2 May 1915.

Military History

He died of pneumonia in Bagthorpe Military Hospital in Nottingham and was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref 3821). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 15 January 1919: 'Nicholson. Gunner Arthur Nicholson, RFA, husband of Edith, died January 13th of pneumonia at Berridge Road Military Hospital, age 29, 61 Collygate Road. General Cemetery. Only son of Mr and Mrs Nicholson, 31 Kinglake Street. His brother, Jack, died of wounds 1915. Mother father, sister Lizzie [Annie Elizabeth] and Ernest [brother in law, m. 1912].' Soldiers' Effects: his sole legatee was his widow, Edith. His brother Pte. John Thomas Nicholson, 4th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment), died of wounds on 2nd May 1915. He was buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
