James Mennie was a Scotsman from Aberdeen who married Caroline Overy in 1889 at St Pancras. He started his working life as a stationer’s clerk and by 1911 he was a Stationary Branch Manager Principle and commercial traveller. James and Caroline had nine children between 1891 and 1909, eight of them were girls and only one boy who was named James, born 1890. Elizabeth, Dorothy and Marie, were born in Camberwell, London. About 1894, the family moved to Nottingham where Kathleen, Muriel, James, Eveline, Sybil and Caroline were born. James was a 12 year old schoolboy in 1911 and it appears he went to Nottingham University later on and had a connection to Welbeck, Nottinghamshire.
James’ medal index card records that he first served in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a Private, number 25831. This is followed by his transfer to the 7th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment with a rank Second Lieutenant. He went to the Western front on 8th April 1918 and was killed in action five months later. He is buried in the Epehy Wood Farm, British Cemetery, Epehy, France. His mother, who at the time, was living at 63 Mayfield Rd, Moseley, Birmingham, applied for his medals on 23rd October 1921.
