Family History

Major Eustace Victor Knight was born in 1888 at Northampton and was the son of Samuel Johnstone Knight a dairyman and Eliza Knight née Austin of the Dairy Harborough Road Kingsthorpe Northampton. His father Samuel was born in 1845 at Olney, Buckinghamshire and his mother Eliza Austin was born in 1850 at Isham, Northamptonshire, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Northamptonshire registration district, they went on to have the following children, Albert Austin b1874, Ernest Johnson b1875, Jospeh Arthur b1877, Ada Beatrice b1884, Major Eustance Victor b1888 and Elizabeth Harriet b1888 all were born in Northampton. Major married his wife Eleanor Albina Kerman in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Leicestershire Registration district, they lived at 2 Park Avenue Hucknall Nottinghamshire and had a son Samuel Victor born 24th January 1913. In the 1911 census Major and his wife are living at 216 Tudor Road, Leicester and are shown as Major Eustace Victor Knight 23 yrs a butter salesman shop assistant, he is living with his wife Eleanor 23 yrs a hosiery machinist, also living with them and listed as a visitor is Fanny Kerman 26 yrs a domestic servant. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 81 Harborough Road, Kingsthorpe, Northampton and are shown as Samuel Johnson Knight 66 yrs a dairy man, he is living with his wife Eliza 61 yrs and their children, Elizabeth Harriett 31 yrs a dress maker and Ada Beatrice 27 yrs an assistant in her fathers dairy. Majors probate was proven (with will) on 7th May 1918 at Nottingham, and shows him as Major Eustace Victor Knight of 2 Park Ave, Hucknall, Nottingham, Private in H.M. Army died 22nd October 1917 in France, his effects of £116 12 shillings and 6 pence were left to Eleanor Knight , widow Following his death his widow Eleanor was awarded a pension of 29 shillings a week which commenced on 20th May 1918.

Military History

Private Major Eustace Victor Knight enlisted at Hucknall, he initially served with the service number 55785 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 22nd October 1917 whilst serving with the 103rd Company Machine Gun Corps. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
