Frederick Key was born in 1887 at Mansfield, he was the son of John a corporation gas fitter and Eliza Key née Sissons of 74 Broxtowe Drive, Mansfield, His father John was born in 1860 at Mansfield, his mother Eliza Sissons was born in 1863 at Mansfield they were married on 17th April 1881 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 46 Pembroke Street, Mansfield, John 52 yrs is a gas fitter for the local corporation, he is living with his wife Eliza 47 yrs and their children, James 28 yrs a gas fitters labourer, Frederick 23 yrs a gas fitters labourer, Eliza 18 yrs a cotton spinner, Ellen 14 yrs a cotton spinner, Joseph 11 yrs a scholar and Annie 8 yrs a scholar.
Private Frederick Key enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters regiment and was killed in action on 29th September 1918, he is buried: La Baraque British Cemetery, Bellenglise, France. Row A. Grave 24.
