Family History

Parents: Hugh and Helen Hotson of 31 West Hill Drive Mansfield. Hugh has died in 1903 and Helen in 1913. William's sister, Jean, was his next of kin, but on CWGC she is down as widow, but William never married. His two brothers, Andrew and Robert also served, Robert being killed on 31 July 1915.

Military History

In France from 02/03/1915. Promoted to lance corporal, then Company Sergeant Major and to 2nd lieutenant on 17/07/1917. Buried Cavalletto British Cemetery, Italy 'The Sherwood Foresters in the Great War 1914-1919, 1/8th Battalion', p.167 (Gommecourt 1916-1917): 'We lost two excellent Comp. Sergt.-Majors, G Powell and Hotson, who went to England to train for commissions ... Hotson unfortunately met his fate in Italy.'
