Family History

Frederick Evans Hall was baptised on 27th November 1888 at St Albans church, Nottingham (also baptised at the same time was his brothers Albert and Arthur Hall.) he was the son of Thomas Henry a hosiery hand and Charlotte Martha Hall of 19 Bond Street, Nottingham In the 1911 census we find Frederick a boarder living at 14 Hartford Street, Nottingham with his future wifes family, he is 22 yrs and an auctioneers clerk, he is living with Joseph Brooks 50 yrs a foundry worker and his wife Ruth 43 years and their children including Ethel Brooks. Frederick Evans Hall married Ethel Brooks (born 7th November 1887) they were married on 18th April 1915 at St Saviours Church, Nottingham, they lived at 178 Waterway Street, The Meadows, Nottingham. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week commencing 29th May 1916.

Military History

Private Frederick Hall, served with the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 20th July 1915 and was killed in action on 4th October 1915. [1] He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

[1] This is the date of death given by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and in 'Soldiers Died in the Great War.' The register of the disposal of his personal effects says death took place between 1st and 4th October 1915. It seems very likely that he was killed in the fighting in the previous days.Death notice published 6th December 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-“HALL. – Killed in action, October 4th, Private Frederick Hall, 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, aged 27 years. He did his duty. – Dad, Albert, and Arthur.” In memoriam published 4th October 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HALL. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Private Frederick Hall, Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action at Loos, October 4th, 1915. And with the morn that angel face will smile, loved long and lost awhile. – From his sorrowing wife Ethel.“HALL. – Killed in action, October 4th, 1915, Frederick Evan Hall, Northumberland Fusiliers. Fondly remembered. – Brother Arthur and Louie.“HALL. – In loving memory of Private Frederick Hall, Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action October 4th, 1915. He bravely answered duty's call, but God had willed that he should fall. – Ma, Becky, Lucy, and Bill (in France).” In memoriam published 4th October 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HALL. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear husband, Pte. Frederick Hall, Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action at Loos, October 4th, 1915. Christ will link the broken chain closer when we meet again. – From his loving wife Ethel.“HALL. – In loving memory of Pte. Frederick Hall, Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action at Loos, October 4th, 1915.
