James William Holmes was born in 1885 at Furniss, Derbyshire and was the son of Edward a schools inspector and Zillah Holmes née Hemingway of Pleasley. James William married his wife Mary Gambon (born 11th July 1884 Sheffield) in 1905 at Mansfield, they lived at 3 Co-Op Villas, Warsop, they went on to have the following children, James Walter born April 1906, Doris May born 1908 but died in 1912 and Sylvia born June 1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 67 Moor Street, Mansfield and are shown as James William Holmes 26 yrs a grocers shop assistant, he is living with his wife Mary 26 yrs and their children, James Walter 4 yrs and Doris May 3 yrs of age. Following James's death his widow Mary was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 21st October 1918.
Private James William Holmes enlisted in 1916 at Mansfield, he served with the 1/6th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 22nd March 1918, having no known grave his names is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
