Family History

Frank was born in 1897 at Bingham and was the son of Francis a farm labourer and Hannah Harris née Cowdell of Nottingham Road, Bingham. His father was born in 1856 in Bingham and his mother Hannah Codwell was born in 1858 also in Bingham, they were married in 1878 in Bingham and went on to have 12 children two of whom sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed in the 1891/1901/1911 census were : - Miriam b1876, Annie b1878, Harriet 1880, Phoebe 1882, Frances 1883, Kate b1887, James b1889, Zillah b1893, Harriett b1895, Frank b1897 and Hannah b1900, all the children were born in Bingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Nottingham Road, Bingham, Francis is the head of the family 55 years his wife Hannah is 53 years, son James 23 years , daughter Harriett 17 years, Frank is 14 years of age and a farm labourer born Bingham and Hannah daughter 11 years The army register of soldiers effects has Frank listed incorrectly as 4th battalion, Sherwood Foresters , his military will was made in favour of his father Francis and mother Hannah, his effects were 28/07/1915 £3-10s-6d and on 23/07/1919 a gratuity of £3 was made to his mother Hannah. Army form AFW 5080 - submitted following the death of a serving soldier by his next of kin in this case signed by his father, shows that his parents were Francis and Hannah and they lived at Moor Lane Bingham. He had a brother James 28 years Mathew Wicks 25 years and Frederick Furnis 38 years (brother in laws) Sister Harriett Wicks 24 years Frances Furnis 38 years and Hannah Harris 21 years and Calry Harris 32 years (sister in law)

Military History

4659 Private Frank Harris enlisted into the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) as a special reservist (6 years) on 12/11/1913, aged 17 years 127 days in Nottingham. He was a farm labourer and 5 feet 4 inches in height. He was posted to France and the 1st battalion on 27 December 1914 and probably arrived on 3 January 1915 with a draft of 65 men. The 6th February 1915 was just another day in the trenches, improving the defences, which meant erecting breastworks as the water table was so high. Frank was killed alongside James Eason and likely from shellfire. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

Extra Information

His brother Lance Corporal James Harris enlisted in Nottingham and initially served with the service number 14/20815 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 11th October 1915 and was serving with the 6th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers when he died on 10th April 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
