Harry was born in Nottingham in 1882 and was the son of James Henry and Sarah Guthrie. In the 1901 census - the family are living at 2 Lyndhurst Terrace Nottingham and appear as - Harry Guthrie, head, 49; Sarah, wife, 41; Percy H, son, 19; Bernard, son 17; Minnie, daur, 15; In the 1911 census -neither Percy of Bernard found (possibly spelling error on index) however living at 3 Atlas Street Nottingham - and now known as James Henry Guthrie, head, widower, (born London); together with his married daughter Minnie Edith Bacon, daughter, 28; her husband William Bacon, son in law. 25; Bernard Bacon, 11 months; Effects from Army - 6/11/1919 -to his sister Minnie E Bacon. £12. 19 shillings and 4 pence and gratuity of £1,. 7 shillings. 10 pence;
31359 private Henry Percy Guthrie enlisted in Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 6 October 1915. After training he was posted to the BEF and 1st battalion. During June 1917 the battalion was frequently based in the town of Ypres, which was persistently shelled. The war diarist saw 10 killed or died of wounds and 53 wounded as not excessive. At some point after 14th June, Harry was wounded and moved down the evacuation chain to the Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek, and on 20 June, he died there and was buried in the adjacent Military Cemetery.
