Military History

Private Ernest Victor Knowles, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and was killed in action 13th March 1915 during the battle of Neuve Chappelle. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial (panel 26 and 27). His photograph, with the news of his death, was published on 8th May 1915. The date of death was given as 11th March 1915. There was much confusion about casualties in the Sherwood Foresters at Neuve Chapelle but most incurred during the German counter-attack on 13th March 1915.
