Frank Watson was born in 1891 in Basford and was the youngest son of Thomas a coal miner and Elizabeth Watson née Watson of 16 Napoleon Square, Cinderhill, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1851 and his mother Elizabeth Watson was born in 1849 also in Basford, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district , they went on to have 8 children, sadly one died infancy their surviving children were all born in Basford and were : Henry b1874, Emma b1881, William b1883, Thomas b1885, Charlotte b1888, Eliza b1888 and Frank b1891. In the 1911 census the family were living at 16 Napoleon Square, Cinderhill, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas 60 yrs a disabled former coal miner, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 62 yrs and their children William 28 yrs a labourer, Eliza 23 yrs a winder ad Frank 20 yrs a grocers assistant
Privet Frank Watson enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with service number 165013 in the Royal Field Artillery later transferring and serving in 'Z' Coy, 18th battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers He was killed in action on 16th April 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial (Panel ref. Pier and Face 3C and 3D).
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 2 May 1917: ‘Watson. Killed in action April 16th, Private Frank Watson, Lancashire Fusiliers, aged 26 years, youngest son of Mr and Mrs T Watson, Cinderhill. Father, mother, sisters, brothers.’ In memoriam published 16th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WATSON. – In loving memory of Frank (Lancashire Fusiliers), dearly-loved youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Watson, Cinderhill, who fell in action April 16th, 1917. Days and nights still hold its sadness, tears of sorrow often flow, for the one we loved most dearly, whom God claimed a year ago. – Father, mother, sisters, brothers, and Trixie.” Above in memoriam is courtesyof Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918
