Family History

On the 2nd July 1870 at St John the Baptist Church, Royston, Yorkshire, the marriage ceremony was performed be-tween Joseph Denton and Elizabeth Machell. Joseph was an agricultural labourer but later rose to foreman and bailiff. The pair settled down at Thurnscoe, Yorkshire, Joseph’s home town. Over the next twenty years or so, they had 10 children all born in Thurnscoe Tragically they lost five of the ten, four of them in December 1882. Sometime during the decade following 1891 the family moved to Mattersey. One of the surviving children, Joseph, who was 21 in 1911, was working away from home, living at High Fields Farm, York Road, Doncaster was working as a horseman on the farm. It was he who joined the army when war broke out.

Military History

Joseph enlisted at Worksop, joining the 50th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. His records are sparse but at some time he became a prisoner of war and died in Germany. His body was later re-buried in the Montcornet Military Cemetery, France.
