Family History

Fred Dalby was born in 1888 at Ruddington, he was the son of Arthur a frame work knitter and Mary Ann Dalby née Barnard, of Easthorpe Street, Ruddington. Arthur was born in 1857, Mary Ann Barnard was also born in 1857 both were born in Ruddington, they were married on 12th December 1875 at St Pauls Church Nottingham, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood. Fred married Elizabeth Beatrice Goff (born 3rd March 1887) in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had two children, Kathleen May born 27th September 1911 and Frederick Harry born 10th August 1914. In the 1911 census Fred is living with his parents at Easthorpe Street, Ruddington, his father Arthur 54 yrs is a frame work knitter, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 54 yrs and their son Fred 23 yrs a lace hand and his wife Elizabeth Beatrice 24 yrs, also at the address is two of his brothers Reuben 20 yrs a lace hand and Harry 18 yrs a boot maker. Fred and his family later lived at 36 Port Arthur Road, Colwick, Nottingham, Commencing 6th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military History

Private Fred Dalby enlisted at Beeston whilst residing at Sneinton, he served with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and was killed in action on 31st July 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.

Extra Information

His brother Private Harry Dalby served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 and is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont Hammel, France.
