Family History

Father: George Carder, born in 1845 in Nottingham and worked as a fancy box maker. Mother: Charlotte, born in 1854 at Loughborough, Leicestershire. The family lived at 28 St. Matthias Road, Nottingham before moving to 13 Lancaster Road, Sneinton, Nottingham. Fred Carder had three brothers; Albert, born in 1875 and working as a telegraph clerk, Harry, born in 1894 and working as a bank clerk and Tom Godkin Carder, born in 1896. All the children were born in Nottingham.

Military History

Fred Carder was called up and following training was drafted to France. He fought with 'A' Company, 7th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action at the start of the Third Battle of Ypres and was buried in the New Irish Cemetery. His body was probably reinterred by CWGC as the family headstone records that he was buried at Pond Galleries, Ypres.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 12 October 1917: 'Carder. Killed in action October 7th, Private Fred Carder, Sherwood Foresters, age 23 (sic), son of Mr and Mrs Carder, Dale View, Lancaster Road.' Inscription on family headstone, Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: (George Carder) also Fred son of the above killed in action September 26th 1917 interred at Pond Galleries, Ypres, aged 24 years.
