John William Richards was born in 1886 he was the son of John Henry Richards, deputy town clerk of Nottingham, and Mary Jane Richards née Posnett Lamb , of 16 Caledon Road, Nottingham, he had two sisters Ellen and Alice.John Henry was born in 1851 and Mary Jane Posnett Lamb was born in 1853 both were born in Nottingham, they were married on 28th June 1877 in Nottingham, they had 3 children. In 1911 he was boarding at 45 Osborne Road, Forest Gate Essex, he is shown as being 24 yrs single and a boarder he is a solicitor.
Lieutenant John William Richards was commissioned on 30th August 1915 to temporary Second Lieutenant with the Royal Marines Light Infantry, he was drafted to the Mediterranean Expeditionary force on 16th February 1916.on 28th February he joined the 1st Royal Marine Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 13th November 1916 during an attack on Beaucourt in France and is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel (grave ref IV/1/32)
Nottingham Corporation minutes of council meeting 1 January 1917: 'Expressions of sympathy to the relatives of Lieutenant JW Richards RM ... killed on active service.' (he was the son of the Deputy Town Clerk).
