Family History

Henry Clarke was born in 1884 at Hucknall and he was the son of Lydia and William Clarke a coal miner of 46 Whyburn Street, Hucknall. His father was born in 1855 at Droitwich and his mother Lydia Hayes was born in 1859 at Blidworth they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded at the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Fanny Elizabeth b1880, Susan b1887, Emma b1889 , William b1891 and Benjamin b1898 they were all born in Hucknall. Henry was the common-law husband of Miss L. Mitchell, of 31 Hankin Street, Hucknall and father of their child, William Henry Clarke Mitchell. His common law wife was awarded a pension of 6 shilling and 8 pence a week which commenced on 21st August 1918.i

Military History

Rifleman Henry Clarke, initially served with the service number 13474 in the Rifle Brigade, he was serving with the 18th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, when he died of wounds on 4th April 1918. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
