William James Butler was born in 1896 at Millwall he was the son of George an electrician and Jane Butler née Whitehouse and the brother of George, Harry and Albert Edward Butler of 17, Goodliffe Street, Nottingham. George was born in 1862 at Wineby, Lincolnshire, Jane Whitehouse was born in 1866 at Chester, they were married on 21st February 1888 at St Andrews, Nottingham, they had 4 children. In 1911 the family are living at 17 Goodliffe Street, Nottingham, George 49 yrs is an electrician he is living with his wife Jane 45 yrs and their children, George 20 yrs a shop assistant, Harry 17 yrs an apprentice book binder, William James 14 yrs a scholar and Albert Edward 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private William James Butler enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Hyson Green he was killed in action, 26th September 1917, age 21, during the attack near Wieltje, Belgium. Buried : Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 12. Row E. Grave 2.
